Centre Scraps Senatorial Debate Proposal

Centre College is dropping its bid to host a debate between Senate candidates Mitch McConnell and Alison Lundergan Grimes.

The liberal arts college had hoped to host the event early next month.

Centre officials were optimistic back in July that the college – which has hosted two vice presidential debates since 2000 – would be successful in attracting the candidates to square off on their campus in September. But Richard Trollinger, Vice President for College Relations at Centre, says the stars simply didn’t align in time.

"I think it's fair to say we're a little surprised. We went into thinking this was going to work," he says.

Centre had planned to team up with AARP and WAVE-TV out of Louisville to host the event.

Now the only joint appearance on the calendar for McConnell and Grimes is a debate scheduled for Oct. 13 on KET.

Josh James fell in love with college radio at Western Kentucky University's student station, New Rock 92 (now Revolution 91.7). After working as a DJ and program director, he knew he wanted to come home to Lexington and try his hand in public radio.
