Lexington, KY – Fusion, which stands for For Unity and Service In Our Neighborhood, is an annual event that gives freshmen and upper classmen the opportunity to lend a hand at over one hundred local sites. Mary Kate Fields is the Executive Director of UK Fusion.
"Retirement homes, neighborhoods, parks, non-profit agencies, we're going to help clean and organize, do some clerical work. We're going to Big Brothers and Big Sisters, Habitat for Humanity, so we have a lot of different kinds of projects today."
Fields says Fusion is a great way to introduce new students, and community groups, to one another.
"Freshmen, I know are kind of overwhelmed when they first come to this campus. It's so big, but this is a way for them to get out beyond campus and go throughout the community in Lexington and have them get familiar with the city."
With over 14-hundred students, faculty and staff participating, organizers say UK Fusion is one of the largest single-day community service projects in the state.
