BYSC Holds Earth Day Celebration

FCPS.net

Environmentalism and sustainability were the subjects of an awards ceremony in downtown Lexington Wednesday.

Students from public and private schools across Fayette County gathered in the Kentucky Theater for the fourth annual Earth Day Celebration of the  Bluegrass Youth Sustainability Council.  The group used the occasion to recognize these institutions for reaching various milestones in conservation and sustainability.  Examples include reducing the use of Styrofoam in cafeterias, planting trees, and composting.  Lucy Wan, a member of the Council and outgoing senior, praised the younger members for their environmental work.

"We will be hard-pressed to find a community that has embraced the power of sustainability as openly as right here in the Bluegrass.  Thank you for setting a great model and example as the pioneers of going green," she said.

Apart from the general awards, Bryan Station Middle School was recognized as a Green Ribbon School by the US Department of Education.  Kentucky American Water also provided bottle refilling stations to four elementary schools that won a video psa contest.  More information on BYSC and its activities can be foundonline.
