Bone Up On Candidates In Kentucky's Contested Congressional Primaries

Kentucky's Republican and Democratic primary elections are Tuesday. Four of the state's six congressional districts have contested primaries. Incumbents John Yarmuth in the 3rd District and Thomas Massie in the 4th District have no primary opposition. But they will face challengers in the general election this fall.

U.S. Rep. Ed Whitfield, a Republican, is not seeking re-election in the 1st District. Only one Democrat filed to run in the 1st District. No Democrats filed to run in the 5th District. Below is a look at the contested primaries on Tuesday.

1ST DISTRICT

REPUBLICANS

JASON BATTS

Judge advocate for the Army Reserve. Elected county attorney in Hickman County in 2014.

MILES A. CAUGHEY JR.

Military veteran, former steel worker. Raises cattle in Peedee.

JAMES COMER

State legislator, 2001-2012. State agriculture commissioner, 2012-2016. Republican candidate for governor in 2015, lost by 83 votes to Matt Bevin in the Republican primary.

MICHAEL PAPE

Worked as U.S. Rep. Ed Whitfield's district director for two decades.

REPUBLICANS

HAROLD BRATCHER

Real estate agent, trucking company owner.

EVERETT CORLEY

Real estate agent. Former candidate for the Louisville Metro Council and the state House of Representatives.

ROBERT DeVORE

According to The Courier-Journal, DeVore is a military veteran and a former McCreary County school board member. He ran for Louisville mayor in 2014, losing to incumbent Greg Fischer.

REPUBLICANS

JOHN BURK JR.

Insurance agent. Former real estate agent.

HAL ROGERS

Incumbent. First elected in 1980. Chairman of the House Appropriations Committee since 2011.

Incumbent. First elected in 2012. Aide to former Republican Gov. Ernie Fletcher.

ROGER Q. BRILL

Engineer. Owns and manages a steel fabrication business.

DEMOCRATS

NANCY JO KEMPER

United Church of Christ minister. Former director of the Kentucky Council of Churches.

GEOFF YOUNG

Former state worker in the Kentucky state energy office. Former congressional candidate in 2014 and candidate for governor in 2015, both unsuccessful.
