Gov. Steve Beshear and his wife, Jane, are headed to England this week to promote tourism in Kentucky.
Also making the trip, according to state officials, are representatives of the Tourism, Arts and Heritage Cabinet and officials from convention and visitor bureaus in Louisville, Lexington and northern Kentucky. Tourism, Arts and Heritage Secretary Bob Stewart says the United Kingdom sends the most overseas travelers to Kentucky and the trip is an effort to expand that market.
During the visit, the governor plans to meet with journalists and others in the travel industry to promote Kentucky's $13.1 billion tourism industry – and, of course, horses.
"We're also going to be able to go to Royal Ascot, which are the races that are going on over there, promote the Breeder's Cup that's coming up here for Kentucky, and having just had a Triple Crown winner there's no better time to be talking about attracting people to come see our horse racing than right now," he says.
Officials say the Beshears are scheduled to arrive in England on Wednesday and return Sunday.
