An engineering firm located in downtown Lexington plans to expand, adding another 100 jobs and another 15,000 square feet to its facility.

In what Lexington leaders are hailing as another major step forward for the city’s aerospace industry, Belcan Corp. announced it plans to beef up its presence in the Vine Center. The company added the location in Lexington a decade ago with around 22 engineers on staff. All told that number will swell to 267 – many University of Kentucky graduates, who will be helping to design high-profile military helicopters and other projects.

"We'll be doing a lot of continuation and building upon really the skills we've developed in the last ten years and just scaling it out," says Belcan CEO Lance Kwasniewski. "You're talking about a lot of interiors work, so reconfiguring the interiors of a Blackhawk, whether it be structures work or locating antennas."

The Cincinnati-based firm expects to invest $1.2 million in the expansion.
