Another WUKY Phoenix Friday... A Soaking Success!!! Up next - Jukebox the Ghost - Sept 26

Was it raining? We didn't notice. A very special thank you to Ben Sollee, Coralee and The Townies, Josh Nolan, and all the fans who braved the weather for some great local music. (Photo by Lillie Ruschell)

Hi Everybody, Friday night's WUKY Phoenix Friday was more than I could have ever hoped for. I didn't take any pictures to share... But here's what I'll never forget. Three fantastic bands... Josh Nolan, Coralee and the Townies and Ben Sollee. But above that it was the people that attended. By 5:30 we estimated 500+ souls occupied Phoenix Park... and folks were still streaming in. By the time Josh had finished, the storm was barreling down on us. We had the tent walls up right when it hit... and it hit big time!!! Many left, some took cover in the local restaurants and businesses and a surprising number huddled together in front of the library and apartment tower. Before we knew it Ben had seized the moment and proceeded to perform impromptu in the parking structure elevator lobby... people cheered, sang along and when he finished every face had a smile. The rain kept on... so we watched and waited. After a while we knew Coralee wouldn't be able to fit into the time we had left... much to the disappointment of many. But we hung in there and the rain began to let up a little. I talked with Ben and we decided we could and should pull something together. We looked into an acoustic performance in the breezeway tunnel between Main and Water Streets... too many code violations. Across the street in The Lexington Arts Center they said absolutely, yes... but not till 9:30... too late. Without hesitation Ben said "I'll do it right here... in the rain." We grabbed Jordan, his drummer, we all huddled around them right outside the front door of the library... and every where I looked I saw joy on all the faces. Umbrellas came out to cover the performers and at the end everyone agreed that the night couldn't have ended any better.

Here's how I feel today... full of gratitude toward everyone that came. And an overwhelming sense of pride to be a part of a community that comes together for the beauty of music. All in all... somehow I'm not so sorry it stormed. What a wild night. Thanks again everybody. See you soon I hope!! Mike G
