Angel Tree Demand Still Up
LEXINGTON, Ky. - Organizers with the Salvation Army’s Angel Tree program say demand is still high this year as the deadline approaches.
Salvation Army volunteers in Lexington expect to serve over 6000 children this holiday season. The Angel Tree program, which allows people to donate Christmas gifts for kids in need, is in its final days with about 1300 angel tags still unclaimed. Major Debra Ashcraft with the Salvation Army says those seeking help aren't necessarily out of work.
"We've heard more of people who have has their hours reduced... With hours reduced, they just struggle to even pay the rent and keep the light and heat on and to be able to put food on the table," Ashcraft says.
Ashcraft says the trend shows that, while economic conditions may be slowly improving, many in Lexington have yet to see the effects. The Angel Tree program ends this Sunday.
