Academy Gaining Steam Thanks To Gates Grant
LEXINGTON, Ky. - Fayette County’s STEAM Academy, which will focus on science, technology, engineering, the arts, and math, has received recognition as an innovative school model by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation.
The academy, which will provide personalized learning and award credits for those who master the material and produce an e-portfolio, is slated to receive a $150-thousand dollar pre-launch grant from Next Generation Learning Challenges. The director of that organization, Linda France, says the grant will also help train teachers on new approaches to increase college readiness.
"We want to certainly hear from the teachers. We've been at the table already, rolling up our sleeves, and thinking about the design, what kind of training is needed," she says.
The program also represents a partnership between Fayette County Public Schools and the University of Kentucky College of Education and is expected to launch in August 2013.
