2nd Sunday Returns To The Blue Grass Airport

May 7, 2012

LEXINGTON, Ky. - Blue Grass Airport representatives and city leaders are inviting members of the public to get some exercise in a unique environment next month.

The third annual 2ndSunday allows citizens to run, stroll, bike, or skate on an airport runway. Urban County Councilman and creator of 2ndSunday Jay McChord says the idea had its genesis in Bogota, Columbia.

"They had issues where they just didn't have enough money to build infrastructure, and so what they did they just was closed streets to car traffic and said, 'Hey, come on out, blade, bike, walk, push a stroller..." he says.

This year the United Way is also adding a 5k race in the morning. In the past the event has drawn more than 10-thousand attendees.

"There will be all kinds of planes and firetrucks and all kinds of stuff to brings the kids out for, but you're also very close to the actual runway that planes are taking off on, so you can have a vantage point of airplanes that you just don't get," McChord says.

2ndSunday is scheduled for June 10thfrom 1 to 5 PM. More information is at ghky.org. 2nd Sunday Returns
