Legislature OK's Measure Raising Dropout Age To 18

FRANKFORT, Ky. -- Kentucky students would be barred from dropping out of school before they're 18 years old under legislation passed by the Legislature on Monday.

The Senate voted 33-5 late Monday afternoon for final passage. That vote came on the heels of 88-10 House vote.

Raising the dropout age has been a priority for Democratic Gov. Steve Beshear, who has been pushing legislation since he took office in 2007.

Kentucky Women Beat Georgia To Reach SEC Final

DULUTH, Ga. -- Jennifer O'Neill sank 3-pointers on each end of a 15-0 run early in the second half that gave Kentucky the lead, and the Wildcats rolled past Georgia 60-38 on Saturday night to earn a spot in the SEC tournament championship game.

DeNesha Stallworth had 18 points for No. 7 Kentucky (27-4), which will face No. 19 Texas A&M in Sunday night's final. The Wildcats, who lost to Tennessee in the 2010 and 2011 championship games, will play for their first championship since 1982.

UK Men Get Badly Needed Win Against Florida

LEXINGTON, Ky. -- Kentucky faces a difficult road toward an NCAA tournament bid, but the Wildcats rallied past No. 11 Florida 61-57 Saturday to help their cause with the committee.

The Gators looked ready to hand a final blow to the Wildcats' postseason hopes after a 19-5 run provided a 57-50 lead with 7 1/2 minutes remaining. Kentucky responded by scoring the final 11 points of the game, boosting the Wildcats' NCAA prospects.

40 Hikers Rescued; Were Lost on Ky. Mountain

LOUISVILLE, Ky. — More than three-dozen Pennsylvania college students visiting Kentucky for a mission trip got lost after their hike unexpectedly stretched into the night, prompting an hourslong effort to rescue them from rough terrain and freezing temperatures, officials said Friday.

The group apparently got disoriented when it got dark while they were hiking near Bad Branch Falls, a state nature preserve near Whitesburg, officials said.

Bill To Save Christian Health Care Plan Revived

FRANKFORT, Ky. -- A House committee has passed a bill that would exempt a Christians-only health care ministry from insurance regulations.

The move by the House Banking and Insurance Committee came Thursday afternoon, just minutes before the Senate Banking and Insurance committee voted to confirm the appointment of Insurance Commissioner Sharon Clark.

Auditor: Ex School Leader Got Unapproved Benefits

LOUISVILLE, Ky. -- Kentucky's auditor says a former northern Kentucky school superintendent received nearly $224,000 in unauthorized benefits and payments during an eight-year period.

The review by state Auditor Adam Edelen says former Dayton Independent Schools superintendent Gary Rye was reimbursed $146,276 for his personal retirement contributions and service credit purchases - benefits not included in his contract.

Beshear Signs Changes To Prescription Drug Law

FRANKFORT, Ky.  --  Governor Steve Beshear has signed legislation that modifies Kentucky's new prescription drug law.

The second-term Democrat took the action on Tuesday, less than 24 hours after it received final passage in the Legislature. He boasted of a bipartisan effort to tweak the law that had unintended consequences for patients in institutional settings.
