Beshear Stiffens Penalties For Texting While Driving

FRANKFORT, Ky. — Motorists in Kentucky could lose their licenses for repeated offenses of the state's law against texting while driving.

Gov. Steve Beshear announced a change Wednesday under which the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet will assess "penalty points" against the licenses of drivers convicted of texting behind the wheel.

Each violation would mean the loss of three points. The Transportation Cabinet could suspend the licenses of adult drivers who accumulate 12 points and of minors after seven points.

Officials Oppose Addiction Recovery Center

ASHLAND, Ky. -- Officials in Boyd County are vowing to do everything they can to stop a planned addiction recovery center.

The Independent reports the action came Tuesday following an hour-long meeting in which residents near the proposed location vocally opposed the Recovery Kentucky center citing concerns about safety and property values.

Coal Miner Killed In Eastern Ky., Two More Injured

HARLAN, Ky. -- Kentucky officials say a coal miner has been killed and two more injured in an underground eastern Kentucky mine.

The miners were working with a mining machine and became trapped when a wall apparently collapsed.

The collapse killed 56-year-old Lenny D. Gilliam of Appalachia, Va.

Youth Sports Coach Charged With Abusing 6 Boys

LOUISVILLE, Ky. _ A northern Kentucky youth sports coach has been charged with sexually abusing six boys entrusted to his care.

A grand jury in Boone County on Tuesday handed up 14 charges against 46-year-old Michael Schweitzer of Hebron. Schweitzer has been in custody since June 26 on charges of sodomy with an incapable person or someone unable to give consent, unlawful transactions with a minor and illegal possession of a controlled substance.

Police say Schweitzer slipped a sleeping pill to one 13-year-old boy staying with him, then molested the youth while he slept.

Auditor Finds Misspending, Intimidation In Agency

FRANKFORT, Ky.-- A state agency responsible for Kentucky's response to weather disasters and other emergencies has been slammed by a team of auditors who are reporting misuse of taxpayer money, intimidation of employees and an overtly hostile workplace.

Auditor Adam Edelen said Tuesday that Kentucky Emergency Management may have misspent millions in recent years, some of it on alcohol, entertainment and door prizes at conferences.

Beshear Says Ky. Third In Car Production Nationally

FRANKFORT, Ky. -- Gov. Steve Beshear is bragging about Kentucky's standing as the nation's third-ranked automobile-producing state.

Beshear said Monday that only Ohio and Michigan produced more vehicles in the first half of 2013. And he said Kentucky is on pace to surpass last year's production total of more than 1 million vehicles.

The second-term Democrat said growth in the automobile industry means more jobs and a stronger economy in Kentucky.
