VICCO, Ky. — Eight months after the tiny Appalachian town of Vicco took a stand against gay-based discrimination, it's basking in a flurry of attention and even an infusion of much-needed cash. All that fuss has its openly gay mayor dreaming of reviving a coal town that has long been fading.

Out-of-towners occasionally venture far off the interstate to visit the struggling coal town of about 330 residents. They pose for pictures in front of city hall or shake hands with Mayor Johnny Cummings.

Grimes Attacks Obama Administration Over New EPA Coal Regs

FRANKFORT, Ky.-- Democratic U.S. Senate candidate Alison Lundergan Grimes is attacking the Obama administration for an EPA ruling that she says will cost coal mining jobs in Kentucky.

Grimes, seeking to replace Senate Republican Leader Mitch McConnell, said Friday that she was "deeply disappointed" by the Environmental Protection Agency's decision to impose stricter limits on carbon pollution from new coal-fired power plants.

Carter Among Ali Humanitarian Award Winners

LOUISVILLE, Ky. -- Former President Jimmy Carter will receive a lifetime humanitarian achievement award bearing Muhammad Ali's name next month, headlining a list of winners that includes singers Christina Aguilera and Michael Bolton for the first-ever awards that promote achievements in the fight for social justice.

Ali, who was a three-time heavyweight champion, plans to be in his hometown of Louisville, Ky., for the presentation of the Muhammad Ali Humanitarian Awards on Oct. 3.
