Gov. Beshear Appeals To President Obama For Help On Hemp

FRANKFORT, Ky. - Despite voicing concerns about the legalization of industrial hemp during the 2013 General Session in Frankfort, Gov. Steve Beshear is now asking the president for help on the issue.  Beshear allowed Senate Bill 50, which set up a licensing system for hemp growers, to become law without his signature.

Kentucky's General Fund Revenue Increases In May

FRANKFORT, Ky. -- The state's top budget official is reporting an 8.3 percent increase in General Fund revenue in May, largely thanks to improved collections from the sales tax, individual income taxes and property taxes.

Budget Director Jane Driskell released a monthly revenue report on Monday.

The report showed property tax collections increased by 75.2 percent in May. Individual income tax receipts rose by 8.3 percent. And sales tax receipts were up 5.2 percent.

Funeral Set For Pilot In Medical Helicopter Crash

Eddie Sizemore retired as a deputy in the Laurel County sheriff's office before becoming a pilot for Air Evac Lifeteam. His funeral will be on Tuesday in London, Kentucky.

LONDON, Ky. -- A funeral is set this week for a former sheriff's deputy who was piloting a medical helicopter when it crashed in eastern Kentucky.

Eddie Sizemore and two crew members on the helicopter died in the crash on Thursday night in the parking lot of an elementary school in Clay County.

Funeral services for Sizemore will be Tuesday at First Baptist Church of London.

Mines Associated With Lawmaker Rack Up Violations

PIKEVILLE, Ky. -- An influential eastern Kentucky legislator owns the permits on Pike County coal mines that have repeatedly been cited by the state for safety and environmental violations.

Rep. Keith Hall's Beech Creek Coal Co. and other companies that are mining coal on his permits have been cited since 2010 for dropping rocks on homes, mining outside of permitted areas, water pollution and failing to obey regulations on blasting, reclamation and maintaining slurry ponds.

CENTRAL CITY, Ky. -- Former Kentucky lawmaker Steve Nunn, the son of a governor, is at once contrite and indignant about how he landed in prison.

In his first interview behind bars, Nunn repeatedly apologized for the death of his one-time fiancee, Amanda Ross. Almost in the same breath, he turned angry and frustrated about how the legal system has treated him, and vowed to push for the right to take back his guilty plea.

Beshear To Meet With Legislative Leaders Next Week

FRANKFORT, Ky. -- Gov. Steve Beshear is expected to meet next week with House Speaker Greg Stumbo and Senate President Robert Stivers to try to work on a plan to resolve legislative redistricting.

The governor made that announcement on Friday. He said he is confident that the issue will be resolved in a special session sometime this year.
