Beshear Salutes Guard Employers

Frankfort, KY – Around 45-hundred Kentucky employers have at least one employee who serves in the Kentucky National Guard or Reserve. It's a commitment that deserves recognition and praise says former Army reservist and Gov. Steve Beshear. "Thus, I have designated July as Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve Month, as a reminder that it is essential that we express appreciation each and every day for these brave men and women."

Beshear Says Brace Yourself For Cuts

Frankfort, KY – The second year of the current biennium begins Wednesday and in order for the state budget to be balanced by July 2010, spending cuts are coming. Gov. Beshear says it likely will take a couple of weeks to close-out the current fiscal year. "So, it will probably be close to the middle of July before we will know the exact picture of where we are and then be able to start talking with our cabinets about what size of reductions they're gonna be facing."

Calipari To Media - "Not Having Meeks Will Hurt Us"

Lexington, KY – Coach Cal says even though Meeks didn't get drafted until the second round by the Milwaukee Bucks, he thinks Jodie has a bright future in the pros. At the same time, Calipari says Meeks's departure from the Wildcats creates opportunities for other players. Calipari acknowledges that not having Jodie Meeks as a scoring option will hurt his team, at least early on. Calipari made his comments during Monday's SEC Coach's Teleconference.

Progress Reported In Education Commissioner Search

Frankfort, KY – Now that the school board has narrowed the list of candidates to 12, it will meet privately to discuss feedback from the applicants' references. Lisa Gross of the Education Department says another round of interviews could come next week. "And if they do that, it most likely would mean they will cull down the list of 12 people that they interviewed to a smaller group, because that's more manageable to do more interviews."

The Special Session That Was And Wasn't

Frankfort, KY – The special session began at noon on June 15th. But before the House and Senate gavels fell, Attorney General Jack Conway issued an opinion on the question of whether or not the Kentucky constitution needed to be amended to allow video slots at horse tracks. He said it did not.

"The General Assembly may in its own discretion enact the governor's bill allowing VLT's at race tracks," said Conway.
