Bush Administration Seeking To Loosen Mountaintop Dumping Restrictions

Washington, DC – Mining companies often blow off mountain tops in the Appalachians and dump the debris into nearby valleys. The practice has buried thousands of miles of mountain streams in West Virginia and Kentucky. A 1983 federal rule set a buffer zone of a hundred feet around streams. The Sierra Club's Ed Hopkins says it's a bright line that keeps off mining activities.

Successor To Rupp Arena Discussed

Lexington, KY – Officials with the Lexington Center Corporation and the University of Kentucky are talking with business and design firms about the project. The Wildcats have played basketball in Rupp for 32 years, and the facility is showing some age. If approved and funded, the new facility could be in operation in just over three years.

Bishops Ask Beshear To Stop Execution

Louisville, KY – The bishops want Governor Beshear to commute Marco Chapman's sentence to lifetime imprisonment. Chapman pleaded guilty to murdering two children in northern Kentucky in 2004. He has a history of drug abuse and attempted suicide and requested he be put to death for the crime.

Catholic Conference of Kentucky Interim Director Reverend Patrick Delahanty says Chapman is unfit to make such a decision.

Chemical Weapons Destruction Moving Ahead At Depot

Louisville, KKY – On Wednesday, army experts will begin destroying the chemical agents inside one of the depot's leakiest containers and two similar containers. Army experts will work through the winter and expect to complete the job in February. Chemical Weapons Working Group head Craig Williams says that in August 2007, one of these containers sprang its biggest leak ever.
