State Launches Swine Flu Hotline

Frankfort, KY – At least four deaths in Kentucky are now blamed on H1N1, or swine flu.

The latest deaths involved a Caldwell County teenager, with no known health problems, and a Christian County woman in her late 20's, who had underlying medical conditions.

Despite the deaths, health officials say swine flu is no more virulent than seasonal flu and most swine flu patients recover.

Survey Shows Environmental Awareness Up in KY

Frankfort, KY – In a recent survey of 634 Kentuckians, water and air pollution were cited as Kentucky's leading environmental problems. But mountaintop removal, which didn't make the top rankings in 1999 and 2004 surveys, came in third.

The University of Kentucky survey also found that 28-percent of respondents correctly listed runoff from fields, pavements and lawns as the leading source of water pollution in the state. That's up from 17-percent in 2004.

State Brings In Extra Bucks Through Surplus Auctions

Frankfort, KY – A couple of auctions of surplus state property are helping make a dent in Kentucky's ongoing deficit problem. Combined, the auctions raised more than $1.5 million for the commonwealth. Kentucky Public Radio's Tony McVeigh dropped by Tuesday's auction.

Beshear To Take Junket To Japan / China

Frankfort, KY – This will be Gov. Beshear's second trip to Japan and first to China since taking office in December 2007. His Japan trip last year met with some success, says spokesperson Jill Midkiff. "One company that they met with, Fuel Total Systems, announced plans to locate a facility in Lebanon, Kentucky, creating 100 full-time jobs, shortly after his visit there."
