Competing "Disaster Bills" Filed In Frankfort

Frankfort, KY – Western Kentucky was hardest hit by the ice storm and Princeton Rep. Mike Cherry says school districts need some relief. His bill would allow districts to receive up to ten disaster days, if approved by the state education commissioner. "In my experience, down in the west, ten is a good reasonable number for when schools should be getting power back. Everybody in the district were losing their power to the schools for a five to ten day period."

Budget Deal In The Works?

Frankfort, KY – Nothing is firm yet, but it looks like the legislative plan will include a blend of cigarette and alcohol beverage tax increases, plus a raid on the state's Rainy Day Fund. But Senate President David Williams doubts the plan will include state employee furloughs, as suggested by Governor Beshear. "We're going to try to avoid furloughs. We believe people have planned on that money being available and we're going to try to avoid that."

Controversial 9-1-1 Audiotapes Bill Clears Senate Panel

Frankfort, KY – Republican Senator John Schickel of northern Kentucky believes radio and television stations often use 911 tapes to sensationalize coverage of tragic events. His bill would prevent release of the actual tapes, but allow transcripts. "Too often, we hear victims of violent crime and other tragic circumstances being aired on our national and local media, furthering adding to their victimization."

KY Lawmakers Say Tax Talk Not Off The Table

Frankfort, KY – After caucusing for two hours, House Democrats gave their leaders the green light to talk taxes with Senate leaders. All options remain on the table, says Speaker Greg Stumbo. "We believe that further budget cuts to the level that would be required with no new sources of revenue, that it would be devastating to Kentucky's families."

Senate President David Williams agrees. "It appears to me at this juncture that there will be a need for some revenue."

KY Lawmaker Proposes "Disaster Days" For Schools

Frankfort, KY – House Speaker Greg Stumbo says lawmakers are definitely concerned about how school districts will make up days lost to the ice storm. And he predicts help is on the way. "We obviously don't know how bad it is yet, because we don't know when they will be able to go back to school, but yes I think school districts can expect there'll be some attention given to that, and some relief."
