Stumbo Offers Schools - Universities Counter-proposal

Frankfort, KY – Two percent cuts to universities and community colleges aren't sitting well with the presidents of the schools, who say layoffs may be unavoidable. But House Speaker Greg Stumbo says these are tough times and there must be shared sacrifice. "If we restore the funding, then we ought make them hold the tuition levels at the same levels that they are right now. If we restore the funding, that ought to be the goal. And we ought to require them to improve their graduation rate."

Tie Vote Sinks Ultrasound Bill

Frankfort, KY – Thirteen years ago, Heidi Reihing of Silent No More had an abortion. She regrets the decision and says her life has never been the same. "I never got asked one time, are you sure this is what you want to do? I was never offered an ultrasound picture or offered to hear the heartbeat of my child. And maybe if I had, I would not have chose an abortion."

Candidates Spar Over Centrepointe, Future Direction of City During Mayoral Forum

Lexington, KY – Lexington hosted a Kentucky first last night, when its mayoral forum went high tech.
Candidates Jim Gray, Skip Horine, Teresa Isaac and Jim Newberry answered a series of questions from a panel made up of traditional and digital media representatives.
The event, hosted by Awesome Inc. was held in downtown Lexington, but was available to the world via Twitter, Facebook and video blogs. Alan Lytle has this recap.

State Lawmakers Tackle "Sexting" Issue

Frankfort, KY – It's called "sexting," and involves the transmission of nude photographs and videos over cell phones. Lewisburg Rep. Martha Jane King says even some juveniles are engaging in the activity, with often-tragic repercussions. "In Ohio and Florida, two teenaged girls committed suicide after nude photographs that they had sent to their boyfriends were texted around the schools."

Mayor Forum To Be A High Tech Affair

Lexington, KY – Lexington Mayor Jim Newberry is registering displeasure that tonight's scheduled candidates' forum will include not only traditional journalists, but political bloggers as well. Newberry says his campaign has identified at least one such online commentator that has openly supported Vice Mayor Jim Gray.Kakie Urch, with the Scripps Howard First Amendment Center at the University of Kentucky, says, whether the candidates like it or not, political bloggers should have a seat at the table.

Could "Dueling" Lingo Be Dumped Soon?

Frankfort, KY – For 160 years, Kentucky officeholders and members of the bar have been required to swear that they have not fought a duel with deadly weapons. But Louisville Rep. Darryl Owens believes the requirement is archaic and should be eliminated. "It has no relevance to our time. And again, I think it's as much a image thing. The image that a lot of people have of Kentucky, to be quite honest, is not very good. And this does not enhance our image in any way or fashion."
