Students To Get Inside Look at Live Surgeries

LOUISVILLE, Ky. -- – The Louisville Science Center, Jewish Hospital and the Greater Louisville Medical Society are launching a new educational program for young people.

Called Pulse of Surgery, it will allow middle and high school students to view heart surgeries as they're being conducted, and to interact with surgical teams via video conference from the Science Center.

Census Work Nearly Complete

LOUISVILLE, Ky. -- – Census workers have nearly finished following up with Kentuckians who did not turn in their census forms this year.

About 700,000 Kentuckians did not respond to the count, and workers have been out since May 1st knocking on their doors. Regional census office spokesperson Terry Plumb says the follow-up visits will be complete in the next few days.

Football Great Jim Brown Gives Local Kids a Pep Talk

LEXINGTON, Ky. -- – For almost a century, law enforcement officers have used some of their off-duty time to mentor at risk children through the national Police Activities League.

On Thursday, the Lexington PAL chapter got a visit from hall of fame running back Jim Brown. The Cleveland great was in town as part of the Kentucky pro football hall of fame induction ceremonies. Brown met and talked with dozens of young athletes, and saluted their mentors as well.

Council Delays City Layoffs

LEXINGTON, Ky. -- – In his 2010-2011 budget proposal, Mayor Jim Newberry recommended laying-off 17 permanent employees.

The Urban County Council went along with eliminating five jobs in social services, but Vice Mayor Jim Gray says further study will be done into the other 12 positions.

"Retain those positions while the council examines the process for these layoffs and the opportunities that have been provided these people for finding other jobs in government."

Head of Kentucky Democratic Party Stepping Down

FRANKFORT, Ky. -- – Kentucky Democratic Party Chairman Charlie Moore is stepping down after a little more than a year as head of the party.

Moore, who assumed the chairmanship in March 2009, tells Kentucky Public Radio he never intended to hold the position for more than a year.

Plan For Lexington Golf On Hold

LEXINGTON, Ky. -- – A plan to create a separate fund to track revenues and spending for public golf in Lexington is on hold.

The Lexington-Fayette Urban County Council decided not to form what's called an enterprise fund' for golf. Council member Tom Blues believes such a fund might hurt public golf in Fayette County.

"I guess we'd be authorizing them to close some golf courses to lay off employees to make other cuts and adjustments."

Outside Group Will Probe Police Actions

LEXINGTON, Ky. -- – An outside group will review the actions of Lexington's Division of Police following the beating death of a woman.

44-year-old Umi Southworth was discovered in the bushes outside her Lexington home last week. She was so badly beaten, officers on the scene believed her to be dead, and a coroner was not called until nearly three hours later.

Lexington, KY – Newberry says it's a noble effort to want to preserve buildings, but he'd also like to see that same fervor employed toward maintaining the city's purchase of development rights program. That's a program that compensates land owners outside the urban service area for not developing their land.
