Accreditation Organization Seeks Public Input on Lexington Police

LEXINGTON, Ky. -- – Police ride-alongs, inspection of office space, and review of police documents are part of the accreditation process currently underway for the Lexington Division of Police. Department spokeswoman Sherelle Roberts says the Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies, or CALEA, also wants to hear from Lexington citizens.

City Keeping Cool Centers Open On Saturday

Lexington, KY – According to a news release from Mayor Jim Newberry's office, Cool Centers in Lexington will be open at the following areas:

Castlewood Park Community Center, 201 Castlewood Drive, open 12 p.m. to 7 p.m.

Black and Williams Center, 498 Georgetown St., open 12 p.m. to 7 p.m.

Salvation Army, 722 W. Main St., open from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. for heat relief measures.

Hope Center, 360 W. Loudon Ave., open 24 hours/day. Primarily for homeless males, but can accommodate others during the heat advisory.

Today's Forecast: HOT

LOUISVILLE, Ky. – All of Kentucky is under a heat advisory and forecasters are cautioning that people take care out of doors and care of each other.

Louisville expects air temperatures around 97 degrees Friday with heat indexes around 104 degrees. The expected values in Lexington are 94 degrees with indexes into the 100s.

The National Weather Service cautions that weather this hot is especially dangerous for the young and the elderly. The prolonged heat is the problem.

State Budget Director Cautiously Optimistic

FRANKFORT, Ky. -- – State Budget Director Mary Lassiter is cautiously optimistic about Kentucky's economic outlook. She told lawmakers in Frankfort this week that revenue and road fund receipts are up, and unemployment is slightly down.

But Lassiter says even if the state meets fairly optimistic, predicted growth rates for the biennium, the Commonwealth will still be digging itself out of a hole.

Beshear Tours Flooded Eastern Kentucky

OLIVE HILL, Ky. -- – Governor Beshear says state government will do everything within its means to help flood-ravaged communities in eastern Kentucky get back on their feet. The governor flew into Olive Hill Thursday to tour parts of the region devastated by Wednesday's driving rains.

"We've got five counties that have declared states of emergency. Carter is obviously one of the harder counties along with Lewis and Rowan. And then we have Mason and Elliott [counties] who also declared."

Conway, Paul Debate Agriculture Issues

LOUISVILLE, Ky. -- – U.S. Senate candidates Rand Paul and Jack Conway traded barbs Thursday in a forum sponsored by the Kentucky Farm Bureau.

The two fielded questions on agricultural issues from bureau board members during the two-hour event in Louisville.

Conway, a Democrat and Kentucky's attorney general, contends Paul wants to eliminate the U.S. Department of Agriculture and the nutritional programs it provides.
