Federal Panel Considers Kentucky's Race To The Top Application

FRANKFORT, Ky. – Kentucky will defend its latest application for federal education funding when a panel of Race To the Top peer reviewers convenes in Washington Tuesday.

David Cook, Kentucky's Race To the Top project manager, says he and four other education officials will highlight current programs and their ideas followed by a 60-minute Q & A session.

Fancy Farm Kicks Off Political Season

Graves County, KY – Fancy Farm is a small Catholic parish in far western Kentucky, about 30 miles from the Mississippi River. It's also home to an annual picnic that raises hundreds of thousands of dollars for St. Jerome's Church.

Ambulance Bus Ready For Next Emergency

LEXINGTON, Ky. – Tornados, flooding, and ice storms. Those are just some of the emergency situations where state officials say the Commonwealth's new ambulance bus will prove very useful.

Public Health Commissioner Dr. William Hacker helped unveil the bus Thursday morning in Lexington. He says natural disasters and the 9/11 terror attacks have pushed state and local governments to step up public safety.

Sypher Convicted of Trying To Extort Pitino

Louisville, KY – Karen Cunagin Sypher, 50, of Louisville, was found guilty of three counts of extortion, two counts of lying to the FBI and one count of retaliating against a witness. She faces a maximum sentence of 26 years in prison, but under federal sentencing guidelines, the penalty will likely be lighter. She will be sentenced Oct. 27.

The jury deliberated for slightly more than five hours over two days. The trial lasted eight days.

Blue Grass Airport Opens New Runway

LEXINGTON, Ky. – A new 4,000-foot runway is now complete at Blue Grass Airport in Lexington. State and local officials gathered on Runway 9-27 Wednesday afternoon for a ribbon cutting ceremony.

Blue Grass Airport Board Chairman Bobby Owens says the old runway constrained private and corporate aircraft facilities and limited the development of new hangars.
