Fayette Co. Public Schools Back In Session

LEXINGTON, Ky. – Thousands of students across Fayette County and in other central Kentucky school districts were back in the classroom Wednesday for the start of a new school year. Superintendent Stu Silberman has worked in education for 37 years, but says he still gets excited on the first day of school.

"Kids in classrooms, teachers teaching on the first bell. As you can see our floors are shining, just a great feeling to have a new year starting."

KY Speedway Gets Sprint Cup Race For 2011

Sparta, KY – Stock car's top series will visit the 1.5-mile oval for a 400-mile race on July 9, 2011. The track will receive one of the Cup race dates normally reserved for Atlanta Motor Speedway.

The announcement ends a decade-long struggle for the track's original owners to get a Cup race. They filed an antitrust lawsuit against NASCAR and International Speedway Corp. in 2005, claiming the two groups had an unfair monopoly over the sport. The case ended earlier this year.

UK Professor To Survey Mosque Communities

Lexington, KY – A University of Kentucky professor is once again leading an effort to survey some 600 or more mosque communities as part of a national interfaith study. Dr. Ihsan Bagby, is with UK's Islamic Studies Department.

"Our study will focus on a kind of comprehensive view of mosques from numbers of people who attend, to activities, programs; and we do ask questions about radicalism, we ask questions about women participation and other things like that."

Kentucky American Goes Before PSC in Rate Increase Case

FRANKFORT, Ky. – A lengthy evidentiary hearing is underway in Frankfort, where the Public Service Commission is considering testimony in Kentucky American Water's proposed 37-percent rate hike.

Kentucky American says it needs the additional revenue to pay for its new pipeline and water treatment plant. Company president Nick Rowe says having the facility online will mean a solid supply of water even during drought situations.

Investigative Panel Questions Lexington Law Commissioner

LEXINGTON, Ky. – The Lexington city worker who filed two fraud reports has been questioned by members of a special investigative committee. The panel also heard from a key member of the Mayor's administration.

The two allegations of fraud came from Risk management director Patrick Johnston. He told the committee his concerns were related to the process used in 2007 to buy insurance from the Kentucky League of Cities.

Teacher Accused of Selling Pills To Student

GEORGETOWN, Ky. – A Scott County teacher is accused of selling prescription pills to a student.
Kentucky State Police arrested 41-year-old Susan L. Charron of Georgetown late Monday night on a charge of possession of a controlled substance.

Police say they received a complaint about the allegations in April. The investigation was taken to the Scott County Grand Jury, which returned an indictment against Charron.

She is listed as a teacher on the Scott County Public Schools website.

FRANKFORT, Ky. – Kentucky will defend its latest application for federal education funding when a panel of Race To the Top peer reviewers convenes in Washington Tuesday.

David Cook, Kentucky's Race To the Top project manager, says he and four other education officials will highlight current programs and their ideas followed by a 60-minute Q & A session.
