Newberry: Police & Fire Pension Board Still Faces Uphill Battle

LEXINGTON, Ky. – Outgoing Lexington Mayor Jim Newberry addressed his final meeting of the Police and Fire Pension Board Wednesday.

He said historically Urban County Government has not met its obligation to the Lexington Police and Fire pension fund, but that he worked with board members to change that. Newberry hopes the effort will continue when he leaves office.

Beshear Reflects on First Three Years

FRANKFORT, Ky. – In a wide-ranging interview, touching on issues from furloughs to his latest economic development trip to India, Gov. Steve Beshear is still hoping to win passage of expanded gambling before he leaves office.

"I have not lessened my commitment to do something that will get our horse industry on an even playing field again with all of those other states we're competing with who right now have access to a lot more revenue because of expanded gaming of some type."

Lextran Trolley Service Grows - Wins Downtown Award

Lextran's Colt Trolley Service which started operating in April has garnered a Smiley Pete Award from the Downtown Lexington Corporation.

Lexington, KY – Lextran spokesperson Jill Barnett says the bus company is pleased with the growth in ridership for its downtown Colt Trolley service. She says people are especially using the mass transit option for getting between the UK and Transylvania campuses.

Trustees Approve $5.5 Million for UK's Coldstream Laboratories

LEXINGTON, Ky. – Coldstream Laboratories will get additional money of up to $5.5 million from the University of Kentucky. The UK Board of Trustees approved the expenditure Tuesday after a motion from the board's finance committee claimed more funds were needed for working capital, operations, and the development of new products.

Faculty Trustee Joe Peek ultimately voted for the measure, but he did have some reservations.

Paris Needs New Transformer

LEXINGTON, Ky. – Utility crews in Paris are asking residents to reduce their electrical use at least through Tuesday evening while an additional transformer is brought on line. City Manager Michael Nagy says a combination of cold temperatures, increased power consumption, and old age caused a transformer to blow on Monday.

Town Branch Trail Expansion Up For Discussion Tonight

Lexington, KY – The first section of Lexington's Town Branch Trail at Masterson Station opened to walkers and bikers almost five years ago, and now organizers are ready to roll out plans for the next phase of the project. The public is invited to view a number of options at a town-hall style meeting Monday night. Keith Lovan is a municipal engineer for the Lexington-Fayette Urban County Government.
