More Than Half Kentucky Adults Have No Dental Insurance

LOUISVILLE, Ky. -- Newly released poll results say more than half of Kentucky's residents report having no dental insurance.

And while 70 percent of adults in the U.S. say they have visited a dentist or dental clinic within the past year, that number is just 61 percent among Kentucky adults.

Altman came to St. Louis Public Radio from Dallas where she hosted All Things Considered and reported north Texas news at KERA. Altman also spent several years in Illinois: first in Chicago where she interned at WBEZ; then as the Morning Edition host at WSIU in Carbondale; and finally in Springfield, where she earned her graduate degree and covered the legislature for Illinois Public Radio.

A native Iowan, Altman earned her bachelors degree in journalism at the University of Iowa. She remains a devoted Hawkeye. In her free time, Altman likes hiking, swing dancing, and searching for the perfect diner.

Student Group Protests UK's Lack Of Environmental Progress

LEXINGTON, Ky. - Clean energy was the subject of an Earth Day protest at the University of Kentucky.  Members of the student environmental group Green Thumb collected petitions urging the campus’s Climate Action Plan Committee to meet as it has promised.

Organizer Kara Cooper says the committee has been slow to act in the past.

Documentary On Mary Todd Lincoln To Air Tonight On C-SPAN

LEXINGTON, Ky. - Mary Todd Lincoln will be the subject of a 90 minute documentary airing tonight on C-SPAN.  The film is part of a series examining the influence and image of America’s First Ladies.  Mrs. Lincoln’s childhood home and other Lexington locales are featured prominently in the film according to Mary Todd Lincoln House Executive Director Gwen Thompson.

Despite Law, Some Families Lack Autism Coverage

FRANKFORT, Ky. -- When Kentucky passed a law in 2010 to require insurers to cover autism treatment, Heather Dales felt like a weight had lifted off her family.  Until she billed the insurance company.

Since the law took effect in early 2011, Dales said the plan failed to reimburse her and her husband for tens of thousands of dollars' worth of care. Most of it paid tuition to the Highlands Center for Autism in Prestonsburg, Ky., which she said drastically improved the development of her son, Hunter, now 6.
