Richie Havens, Folk Singer Who Opened Woodstock, Has Died... by: Tom Cole

Richie Havens, a Brooklyn-born singer who sang gospel as a teenager, began playing folk music in Greenwich Village clubs in the 1960s and was the opening act at the Woodstock Music & Art Fair in 1969, died Monday of a heart attack at his home in Jersey City, N.J., according to his agent. He was 72 years old.

State's Largest School District Approves Resolution To Raise Dropout Age

LOUISVILLE, Ky. -- The Jefferson County Board of Education has voted in favor of a resolution calling for an increase in the dropout age.

The Courier-Journal reports the board voted on the measure that supports raising the dropout age to 18 despite concerns from member Linda Duncan that it wouldn't "cure out-of-control kids and keep them in school."

A formal vote on the issue won't come until July, and the policy wouldn't go into effect until the 2015-16 school year.

More Than Half Kentucky Adults Have No Dental Insurance

LOUISVILLE, Ky. -- Newly released poll results say more than half of Kentucky's residents report having no dental insurance.

And while 70 percent of adults in the U.S. say they have visited a dentist or dental clinic within the past year, that number is just 61 percent among Kentucky adults.

Altman came to St. Louis Public Radio from Dallas where she hosted All Things Considered and reported north Texas news at KERA. Altman also spent several years in Illinois: first in Chicago where she interned at WBEZ; then as the Morning Edition host at WSIU in Carbondale; and finally in Springfield, where she earned her graduate degree and covered the legislature for Illinois Public Radio.

A native Iowan, Altman earned her bachelors degree in journalism at the University of Iowa. She remains a devoted Hawkeye. In her free time, Altman likes hiking, swing dancing, and searching for the perfect diner.

Student Group Protests UK's Lack Of Environmental Progress

LEXINGTON, Ky. - Clean energy was the subject of an Earth Day protest at the University of Kentucky.  Members of the student environmental group Green Thumb collected petitions urging the campus’s Climate Action Plan Committee to meet as it has promised.

Organizer Kara Cooper says the committee has been slow to act in the past.
