2010 Session Under Way

Frankfort, KY – "House will come to order!" House Speaker Greg Stumbo, bringing the 2010 session to order. It's a 60-day session that will be dominated by debate over a new two-year budget. And with lawmakers still looking for new revenue sources, Speaker Stumbo intends to again offer legislation allowing video slots at horse tracks. "You never know what might happen, but I don't see any reason for the House to take that up unless we know that there's going to be a different outcome in the Senate."

Beshear Plugs Budget Holes

Frankfort, KY – This is the second time this fiscal year and the sixth time since he took office in 2007 that Gov. Beshear has been forced to cut spending. He needs to raise 108-million dollars and to get there, most state agencies will see three-percent cuts. "Initially we thought we might have to cut another six percent. The revision means impacted agencies will only see cuts of three percent."

Capitol Dome Work Almost Done

Frankfort, KY – Right on schedule, workers are beginning to disassemble the 176-feet of scaffolding that rises almost to the top of the inner dome. The rotunda sparkles with fresh paint and new lighting. The marble walls are being cleaned in preparation for reinstallation of the four, original brass chandeliers. "They went to New Hampshire to be restored and they will be back on December 28th. And you will see a brilliance that they haven't had since they were installed in the Capitol originally."

Third Power Company Looking To Recover From January Ice Storm

Frankfort, KY – Western Kentucky was hardest hit by January's ice storm, but 33,000 Kentucky Power customers in the east also lost service.

In February, a windstorm knocked out power to 39,000 Kentucky Power customers and the lights went out on another 21,000 customers in May.

Now, Kentucky Power wants to try to recoup more than $10 million in damage costs associated with all three weather events.

During a post UK2K celebration Herky Rupp, son of legendary coach Adolph Rupp, and former UK coach Joe B. Hall offered Coach Cal and Big Blue Nation their congratulations.
