Democrats Pinning Hopes On Either Conway or Mongiardo

Louisville, KY – Jefferson County Democrats were whooping and hollering last Friday at a party dinner as Congressman John Yarmuth introduced Wendell Ford, the last Democrat from Kentucky to hold a U.S. Senate seat.

After serving as Kentucky Governor, Ford was elected to the U.S. Senate in 1974 and held that seat for 24 years. Now, at 85 years old, he's itching for his party to win his old seat back.

High School Students Train For Large Animal Rescues

Students worked with a 650-pound rubber horse to train in large animal rescue.

LEXINGTON, Ky. -- – With multi-million dollar horse farms dotted across the Bluegrass and many cattle producers in the region, it's not uncommon for central Kentucky emergency crews to work large animal rescues.

A program at Eastside Technical Center in Fayette County is giving the next generation of emergency responders some hands-on training. It brings together students in the Agri-science and Homeland Security programs.

Gov. Beshear Calls For Special Session May 24th

Frankfort, KY – Gov. Beshear says his 17-point-one-billion dollar biennial spending plan is not a new budget. It's just a compromise based on the separate budget plans approved by the House and Senate during the 2010 session. "It meets the basic needs of our people over the next two years. But it's predicated on the understanding that the General Assembly is not willing to raise significant recurring revenue at this time."

Kentucky Declared Major Disaster Area Due to Flooding

Kentucky – President Obama has issued a major disaster declaration for the Commonwealth of Kentucky. The declaration triggers the release of federal funds for communities flooded by last week's torrential rains. But Steve Oglesby with Kentucky Emergency Management work says actually getting those federal funds could take a while.

"FEMA is in state today and will continue to working in the days to come actually going to the counties looking at the damage suffered by the homeowners and the renters as well as the expenses it cost the government," said Oglesby.

Education Task Force Considers "Dramatic Changes"

LEXINGTON, Ky. -- – Systematic change is necessary to improve education in Kentucky. That was the message Tuesday from the head of a national organization to members of the Governor's Task Force on Transforming Education in Kentucky.

Gene Wilhoit of the Council of Chief State School Officers says educators need to focus personalized learning strategies and more training seminars for teachers.

Cupcake Love Spreads In Lexington

Two cupcake bakeries in Lexington are capitalizing on the increased popularity in cupcakes.

LEXINGTON, Ky. -- – It's capitalism at its sweetest.

Two central Kentucky businesses are baking their way through the economic recession with the same unique product, but with different approaches.

BabyCakes Cupcakes opened its location in the Patchen Village Shopping Center in April 2009. It's owned and operated by Tricia and Keith Clemons.

Eight months after BabyCakes opened, Gigi's Cupcakes, a franchise based out of Tennessee, launched its store on Richmond Road.
