State Government Asks Landlords for Lower Rent

LEXINGTON, Ky. – Kentucky state government is asking landlords for a drop in the rent it pays for office space. Governor Steve Beshear says his administration sent letters to property owners last week asking for a five percent reduction in rent to help offset the state's budget shortfall.

Beshear believes it's a reasonable request.

Coach Cal Spends Big to Promote WEG

LEXINGTON, Ky. – The biggest name in Kentucky sports is coming to the aid of the biggest sporting event in Kentucky. John Calipari has been named the charter member of the Commonwealth Club, a luxury ticket package now available for the Alltech FEI World Equestrian Games.

When Alltech President Dr. Pearse Lyons approached him about the idea, Coach Cal says he was happy to help.

Public Hearing On Sale of LG&E, Kentucky Utilities

FRANKFORT, Ky. – A hearing is scheduled Wednesday on the sale of Louisville Gas & Electric and Kentucky Utilities to Pennsylvania-based PPL Corporation. The sale of the two companies, currently owned by E.ON-U.S., must be approved by the Kentucky Public Service Commission.

PSC spokesman Andrew Melnykovich says the hearing is open to the public.

Police & Fire Departments Team Up for Blood Drive

LEXINGTON, Ky. – The Kentucky Blood Center is hosting its annual blood drive competition between the Lexington's police and fire departments, but this year, with a little twist.

Spokeswoman Denise Fields says the departments have decided to come together in honor of a fallen comrade.

DUI Checkpoints Hope To Curb Fatalities On Holiday Weekend

Louisville, KY – Last year during Labor Day Weekend six people were killed and many others were injured in traffic crashes involving alcohol. The Kentucky Office of Highway Safety is trying to reduce that number this year.

Safety Program Director Boyd Sigler says both state and local officers will be watching for impaired drivers.

"It's really a nationwide program, drunk driving, over the limit, under arrest. And police agencies throughout the nation are actually going to be out this holiday weekend."

Judge Rejects Effort To Halt Furloughs

Frankfort, KY – In a six page order denying temporary injunctive relief, Franklin Circuit Judge Phillip Shepherd is refusing to block furloughs ordered by Gov. Steve Beshear.

Shepherd says union employees who sued to prevent six unpaid days off "failed to make the threshold showing of a present or imminent violation of their legal rights."

Furthermore, he says they "have cited no case to support their theory that increased stress in the workplace constitutes irreparable injury."

WEG Foundation Trims Budget

LEXINGTON, Ky. – The operating budget for the World Equestrian Games has been scaled down by around $500,000 due to relatively low ticket sales. Jamie Link, CEO of the World Games 2010 Foundation, told the Lexington Herald-Leader that the integrity of the sporting events will not be compromised, but visual elements such as flowers and decorations are being cut back.
